Smallville started its tenth and final season in September 2010. The series follows the adventures of Clark Kent, who lives in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas, in the years before he became Superman. The first four seasons focused on Clark and years of high school friends. From the fifth season, the show has ventured into more adult settings, possibly focusing on his career at the Daily Planet, and the introduction of other DC Comics superheroes and villains.

Smallville will continue to march towards the finale of its 10-year run, this weekend a new episode called Masquerade which seems to Clark Kent and his fellow heroes a little closer to the inevitable fight with Darkseid. This time the team comes up against a minion of Darkseid, Desaad, who kidnaps Chloe Sullivan and trying to destabilize his evil side. The Incredible Hulk

“The Incredible Hulk” was a popular American television series that ran from 1977 to 1982. It is based on the Marvel comic book character originated by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. It starred Bill Bixby as the main character – Dr. David Banner, and Lou Ferringo, a professional bodybuilder, as the role of the Hulk. 

Although it is based on the comic character, it is actually a loose basis as the writer, director, and producer Kenneth Johnson made a number of changes for the television version. Probably the most noticeable change was the name. “The Incredible Hulk” comic book enthusiasts will be quick to note that Dr. Banner’s first name was “Bruce” and not “David.” However, Johnson made the change because he was not looking to correlate his show with the comic book mythology, but rather, wanted to take the show on a direction different than the story lines presented in the original comic. However, as a “wink” to comic book followers, Dr. David Banner’s middle name was “Bruce.” 

A change that Johnson had wanted to make but was unable to was turning the color of the hulk from green to red. Johnson believed that red better signified “rage” than green. However, Stan Lee put his foot down and required that the Hulk stay green if the title “The Incredible Hulk” was to be used. 

Other changes made by Johnson include a change in the original origin story to make it more believable and less sensationalized. As well, in the television series, Hulk could not talk, but in the comic, the ability for speech varied. As well, overall strength was limited in the television show, unlike the comic. One last change made by Johnson was the cast of supporting characters. He refrained from using the comic book characters in the television adaptation. Rather, he elected to use a number of what he considered to be more “realistic” characters.

Joe Shuster Appreciation, Superman Co-Creator

When I hear of great comic book artists, I usually hear the same names. You have people like: Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, Gil Kane, John Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith, Jim Lee and the list can go on and on.

One name I don’t recall ever hearing in the annals on great comic book artists is that of Joe Shuster, the co-creator and artist who helped bring us Superman.

For the past few years as I’ve collected more of Joe Shuster&#8217s art for DC Comics, in both hardcover and paperback books, it is clear to me he was a fine draftsman, skilled craftsman, innovator, and a great comic book artist.

His design on Superman alone, has directly or indirectly influenced scores of comic book artists and comic book characters.

Things like a chest symbol on the middle of the chest, the tights on the outside, the cape. I mean geez, Batman alone owes a debt of Gratitude to Superman. Cause Bob Kane, drew a trace outline of the Superman character when he was designing Batman. Now you know why Batman probably got a similar placed chest symbol, boots and outside tights.

Anyway, back to Joe Shuster. I find his work ahead of it&#8217s time, a joy to look at, and a creator who in comic books should have a higher profile when it comes to naming great comic book artists.

From his proper use of anatomy and proportion, page design, and easy to follow storytelling. His comic strips got the job done and in my view really helped get the Superman comic strip popular.

Who knows what exactly went on with Jerry Siegel, and the talks and discussions they had when making comic books? But with the likes of Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor they created characters and a world that has transcended mere comic books, but made a cultural icon that has influenced generations of readers. As well as future generations to come.

Joe Shuster did a great job as a comic book artist and creator, I just thought it was time someone else mentioned it. Because I don&#8217t hear it often enough and just wanted to give my thoughts on the situation and to give credit where it is due.

And if anyone at DC Comics should ever read this, how about making the Ultra-Humanite a human being again, and not a monkey. He was the top Superman villain before Lex Luthor was around.
